Publication: 5301 Fountain Road, Knoxville, TN37918 Text: Larry B. Utz November 10, 1940 – April 10, 2016
Larry Bernard Utz was born November 10, 1940, in Gettysburg, PA, the only child of J. Bernard Utz and Mildred Holtz Utz Gardner. He grew up on his grandparent’s farm in Sabillasville, MD, and graduated in 1958 from Thurmont High School, where he played baseball. Larry married Janet E. Hatter in 1961 and was father to her infant son, Len. Larry and Janet divorced after 34 years of marriage, but remained friends and still had weekly phone conversations. Len was always there for his step-father, especially advocating for and supporting Larry during his later health struggles and was with him when he died. Larry was step-grandfather to Logan and Brian Zentz. Larry worked for the Department of Defense at Ft. Richie, MD. He was self-taught and naturally gifted with mechanical devices. After retiring from the Federal Government, he worked for the Daughters of Charity at the Provincial House in Emmitsburg, MD, for another 15 years. Once retired for good, he moved to Bean Station, TN, in close proximity to his beloved Cade’s Cove, which he visited often. He found a lot of joy through being a licensed Ham radio operator, talking to people all over the world. He also was also a train enthusiast. Larry never forgot a holiday or birthday and sent his own personalized greeting cards to recognize special days for others. Larry suffered a stroke in 2007, and against all odds, returned to his home. His strong body was weakened, but his strong will was not. As was his wish, he lived independently at his home, until his death on April 10, 2016. We are grateful for his life. The family will hold a private ceremony to cherish his memory and Interment will be in the family plot at Resthaven Memorial Gardens, near Frederick, MD. Gentry Griffey Funeral Chapel is honored to serve the family and invites you to view and sign their online guestbook below.springsmokies
