J. L. Williams, Democratic Candidate for District Attorney James Lawrence Williams, the Democratic nominee for District Attorney, was born in Gettysburg, Penna., Nov. 29, 1869, and is consequently 30 years of age. He is the third son of M.F. and Sarah (Utz) Williams, and has resided in this county all his life. His father moved from Gettysburg to Straban township in1883 and the following year to the old Herbst farm in Cumberland township, near town. Mr. Williams received his education in the common schools of this county, the Gettysburg High School and the Preparatory Dept. of Gettysburg College. He read law with H. A. Kitzmiller, Esq., and was admitted to the Adams County Bar May 12, 1892, and to the Superior Court March 11, 1896. Mr. Williams has always been active in Democratic politics. He served as Secretary of the Democratic County Committee in 1896 and 1897 and has always used his best efforts for the success of the various tickets. In regard to the office of District Attorney to which Mr. Williams aspires, we need only say that he is in every way fitted, both as to ability and as to character, to have entrusted to him the public's cause in any matter in which it may be concerned.

Gettysburg, Jan.5 - James Lawrence Williams, 67, prominent in civic political and Legal affairs in Gettysburg and Adams county for nearly half a century, died this morning at 5:30 o'clock at the home of his brother, Postmaster B. A. Williams. Death was caused by a heart condition. He had been in failing health for several years. In August, 1933, he suffered three strokes but by November of that year he had recovered sufficiently to return to his office and had continued active practice until he was taken ill last Friday evening. For the last eight years he had resided with his brother. He had enjoyed a wide practice during the more than forty-four years he practiced before the bar in the county courts. The esteem in which he was held by fellow members of the bar is demonstrated by the fact of his election to the presidency of the county bar association. Mr. Williams was a native of Gettysburg. He was born here November29, 1869, a son of the Late Marion Francis and Mrs. Sarah (Utz) Williams. He was graduated from Gettysburg High School and later from the Gettysburg preparatory school. He attended Gettysburg college and read law with the late Jacob Kitzmiller. After the latter's death, Mr. Williams went into the office of the late Jacob I. Butt, Esq., where he completed his study. Held Many Legal Posts He was unmarried. He had held many responsible legal posts during his career. He had served as attorney for the county board of poor directors and for seven years he was county solicitor, completing his service in that position at the end of the year, 1935. He was a former solicitor for the Gettysburg Borough. In 1900 he became district attorney of Adams county for a four-year term. He never sought any other elective office. At the time of his death he was a member of the board of county law examiners and several months ago had been named solicitor to the board of road viewers of the county by Judge W. C. Sheely. He filled the vacancy caused by the death of C. E. Stahle. Surviving are these brothers and sisters: Harry G. Williams, York; Postmaster C. A. Williams, at whose home he died; Emory C.
