Merl Myers
Merl David Myers, 88, of Laurel, died Nov. 6 at the Laurel Regional Medical Center.
Born April 1, 1916, in North Dakota, he was the seventh child and youngest son of the late Charles S. and Rebecca Tusing Myers. When he was 5, his father died, and the family moved back east to be with relatives in Carroll County. He grew up on a farm, helping with farm work while finishing high school. He then attended the University of Maryland and earned an agriculture degree with plans to become a farmer. A farming accident in which he lost his left hand changed his plans.
He briefly taught agriculture at a high school in Garrett County and then returned to marry Lillie Ruby Myers, his high school sweetheart, in 1942. He accepted a job with the Maryland State Department of Education's Division of Vocational Rehabilitation, counseling and assisting people with disabilities in getting training and placement in employment. This work took him to Easton and Randallstown until the family settled in Laurel where they resided for 56 years.
In 1956, he earned a master's degree from the University of Maryland. Afterward he bought and built a home outside Laurel and then built several other homes on the property.
At First United Methodist Church in Laurel, he taught and was superintendent of the Sunday school and chairman of the administrative board.
His interests included gardening, travel in a recreational vehicle including a family trip to Alaska and the Arctic Circle, and building houses, cabins and furniture.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, David Myers of Laurel, Donald Myers of Edgewater, Charles Myers of Mechanicsburg, Carey Myers of Dayton in Howard County and Rebecca Henderson of Faulkner in Charles County; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
He was predeceased by eight siblings.
Visitation is from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow and at noon Thursday at Haight Funeral Home and Chapel, 6416 Sykesville Road, Sykesville, with services to follow at 1 p.m. Burial will be private.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church, 424 Main St., Laurel, MD 20707, or a charity of one's choice.
