In 1922, Ruby's family moved to Ogden, Utah, where she completed high school. Ruby entered nurse's training at LDS Hospital and the University of Utah in Salt Lake City in 1930, receiving her degree as a registered nurse in 1934. She continued on at that institution as a Nursing Supervisor. It was at the LDS Hospital that she first met Ervin Stevenson McDonald. He was a patient; she was his nurse.
