Obituary: Francis “Red” Fekken, age 92, of New Era, passed away Sunday, November 25, 2012 in Muskegon. He was born June 24, 1920 in Chicago, Illinois to Benjamin and Winifred (Bottema) Fekken. He was raised in New Era and lived there most of his life. He was New Era's first marshal and was a charter member of the New Era Fire Department. Mr. Fekken also served on the village council. He was an avid supporter of the Hart-Montague Bicycle Trail and enjoyed biking on the trail. He married Rica Mae Hamm on November 17, 1939. He was plant manager at New Era Canning Company for many years before his retirement. Mr. Fekken was a charter member of the New Era Bible Church. He is survived by his wife, Rica Mae; his son, Larry (Ruthann) Fekken; daughter, Janice (Arthur) Ash; grandchildren, Steve (Heidi) Ash, Lee (Carolyn) Ash, Julie Browand and Jay Fekken; nine great-grandchildren; brothers, John Fekken, Ben (Jeanette) Fekken, Jr., Ray (Mary) Fekken, and Harold (Joyce) Fekken. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Winifred Plescher, Genevieve Houseman and Doris Lohman; brother, Jake Fekken; and great-granddaughter, Bethany Browand. The funeral service for Mr. Fekken will be held Thursday, November 29th, 11 am at the New Era Bible Church with Pastor Mike Deblois and Pastor Bob Sponable officiating. Visitation is one hour before the service at church. Interment: New Era Cemetery. Memorials to New Era Bible Church Building Fund, 5308 S. Oceana Drive, New Era, MI 49446, are appreciated.
