WOODSTOCK, Minn. - Walter Louis Slinger, 88, died Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2000, at his home in rural Woodstock.

He was born May 20, 1912, on the family farm in O'Brien County, Iowa. He moved with his family to a farm in Chanarambie Township, Minn., where he grew up and attended District No. 30 Country School. He began farming in 1937, then married Evelyn Vortherms on Jan. 18, 1937, in Granville, Iowa. The couple farmed in Burke Township south of Woodstock. His wife died in 1998.

He was a member of St. Martin Catholic Church in Woodstock, and served as Burke Township Clerk in 1955. He was also a member of the Hollyhoppers Square Dancers.

Survivors include four sons: Orville of Bradenton, Fla., Wallace and Darwin, both of Pipestone, Minn., and Marvin of Jasper, Minn. a daughter, Mildred Goettsch of New Brighton, Minn. 13 grandchildren 12 great-grandchildren five sisters: Mary Arens of Woodstock, Agnes Chapman of Lake Wilson, Minn., Helen Burkhard of Green Bay, Wis., Margaret Slinger of Slayton, Minn., and Betty Staab of Pipestone and four brothers: Joseph of Hardwick, Minn., William of Northfield, Minn., Henry of Jackson, Minn., and Bernard of Casa Grande, Ariz.

Services begin at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Martin Catholic Church in Woodstock with burial in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be 2 to 5 p.m. today at the Hartquist Funeral Chapel in Pipestone, Minn. A prayer service begins at 7 p.m. today at St. Martin Catholic Church in Woodstock.
