He married Evelyn Buttleman June 24, 1904. James Melvin and Evelyn had a farm in Claybanks Township where Camp Claybanks was later located. While on the farm he had a job at Continental Motors in Muskegon. They had a daughter Nina and a son James. My brother and I attended Pine Grove School and had two miles to go by the main road. I recall one day during the winter I went to school through the woods as a short-cut. I had almost reached the schoolhouse when I came to a huge snow bank of which I could not pass; needless to say, I had to return home. My teacher was Nellie Seaver. Our family moved to Dowling Street in Montague on November 11, 1918. My father, James Melvin, was employed by H.C. Nelson of the White Lake Marketing Association and later took over its operations. Both parents were members of the Montague Methodist Church. Father was a member of the Masonic Lodge in which he was Secretary. James Melvin and Evelyn celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary June 27, 1954. James Melvin died June 23, 1959 and Evelyn passed away February 23, 1960. Their son James is presently in a nursing home in Ann Arbor. Nina Cornell Chapman married Merle C. Smith on August 2, 1934 by Reverend Minor in Muskegon. We had a dairy farm on Chase road in Montague up until 1970 and then built a house on Meinert Park in rural Montague. We had two sons, Merle Wayne and Donald; three daughters, Nancy, Janet, and Darlene. Darlene was a twin of Donald who passed away at six months of age. My husband, Merle, passed away February 20, 1981. Submitted by: Nina (Chapman) Smith. |
