Note |
Source: Oceana County History Volume II, page 309. Carl was engaged to Martha Roltsch before shipping out to serve in France during WWI. Before returning to the USA, he sent Martha a pillow covering and 2 handkerchiefs. Martha put these behind glass in a frame which always hung in their dinning room. Carl and Martha loved to ice fish on White Lake. On his birthday, he speared a huge carp (37 inches long and 48 pounds). He never got his big sturgeon he was after. He always had a contest going on with Martha for the biggest fish, who caught the most fish daily, and for the overall season. It was always recorded on the calendar. Source: Oceana County History Volume III 205, page 345 Carl would be one of the first sixt "minute men" from Oceana County, Michigan, to be drafted for the Army in 1917. Sent to Camp Custer by Kalamazoo and then on to France. Carl and Henry Ludwig returned after serving in "K" Company 337th Infantry from A.E.F. America Expidientionary Force April 4, 1919. They were honored for exceptional valor for service in France. |
